Nina Furstenau
Nina Mukerjee Furstenau is a journalist and teacher. She is program director for food systems communication and teaches at the University of Missouri Science and Agriculture Journalism program as well as the MU School of Journalism. Her recent book, Biting Through the Skin: An Indian Kitchen in the Heartland, a food memoir, was awarded the MFK Fisher Book Award and Les Dames d’Escoffier International Grand Prize for Excellence in Culinary/Culture Writing. The memoir was also chosen as a Kansas’s Notable Book. Her first book, Savor Missouri: River Hill Country Food and Wine, celebrating the flavors of Missouri food and wine, was published in 2013.
Furstenau was in the Peace Corps in Tunisia from 1984 to 1986 where she focused on women in development and began her life-long interest in food story, history, and cultural connection. She was editor and then publisher of two heavy equipment and one environmental magazine beginning in 1987 before coming to MU in 2010.
